I just don't understand why people who have very little are the ones who must lose everything.
Jay and I were stuck in traffic when we heard the loud sirens of an ambulance and a firetruck trying to get trough Avenida. Hearing those loud sirens scared me. It made me think of the poor people that were affected. There’s always been something scary about fire, it seems to have a mind of its own. Eventually, the ambulance and firetruck was finally able to get through. Smoke can be smelled even 2 block away from the station. It was then that I realized that the “squatter’s area” just beside Recto station’s where the fire is spreading. We decided to walk to Legarda since the station’s closed.
Across Recto station and up until the front Isetan Mall were people carrying whatever they tried to save from the fire that devoured or is devouring their homes. All of them are staring hopeless and helpless across the street watching firemen trying to stop the fire from spreading. And as we walked a little more, we saw the thick smoke from where the fire is. Firetrucks kept coming from nearby towns and districts, more sirens but this time it was a welcome sound. Those sirens kept my hope up.
My heart ached seeing this. Little kids and babies were held by their mother trying to keep them asleep or in order. Other people were securing what they have left, a small TV, some clothes, stoves, etc. Some people were just staring at the smoke, the thick black smoke with cinders which only shows the strength of the fire, with blank faces. I can’t help feeling sorry for them. Especially now that Christmas is near. But somehow, seeing them keeping their wits about them, even if they know the fire may have left them ashes for their homes, made me admire their strength.
I just hope and pray that every one of the victims is safe and that the fire has already been put down now (I didnt get to see the news when I got home). If anyone’s planning to help the families, please spread information. I know many are willing to help, I’m sure I am.
Let’s Pray for them.
